Important announcements for Band for this week

Greetings all,

I hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend. For parents, please know that I asked the students to “earn” their day off by spending a few minutes researching the work of Dr. King and hopefully the students took time to do this.
1) For 7th and 8th graders, we have our annual ensembles concert tomorrow night! This is a concert for all 7th and 8th graders and has been published in the band handbook since the beginning of the year, handed out at curriculum night, etc. I’ve been getting communication asking if this is mandatory. Like all concerts at Discovery, yes it is. There is an optional festival two weeks later on February 7 for those who chose to participate and signed up in the fall, but the concert tomorrow night is mandatory for all 7th and 8th grade students.
Also, we have had many students absent as of late and this affects this concert more than most concerts. When we are in a normal band concert, an individual student will share the musical responsibility with 50-60 other members, or around 2% of the responsibility. In this concert (which is now in its 6th year) a person can share between 25-50% of everything musical that happens, which provides a transparent and exposed format for listening, independent learning, peer mentoring, etc. It is important that everyone is at school tomorrow unless you are ill. Proper concert dress applies as always.
For 7th grade, Wednesday’s ensemble concert starts at 6:30pm
For 8th grade, Wednesday’s ensemble concert starts at 7:45pm
Please arrive around 20 minutes before concert time or earlier and see you then.
2) For all students (including 6th graders), the next practice log is due on Monday, February 2.
3) Starting next week, I will have time after school available on some days (for the next two weeks) for those ensembles/students wishing to have extra help in preparation for their MSBOA Festival performance. The criteria is much stricter than our home concert and starting next week I will need to transition back into full band during class time. Feel free to contact me if you wish to schedule time together. I have worked with several groups after school already.
NOTE: The only variable with my time will be the health of my youngest child, as she has been ill and recently hospitalized. I missed part of today to help take care of her but we are hoping she is on the mend but if my family needs me on a day you have scheduled time with me I will do all I can to contact you as soon as possible and will work to reschedule if needed.
4) This is the last week of the semester and students need to have all their work submitted ASAP for credit, whether full or partial.
Thank you for your time and see you soon,
Marc Whitlock
